Everybody is asking what is wrong with the students of Bombay University.
Why do they not protest, gherao their vice-chancellor and principals, burn BEST buses, find examination papers difficult, close down the university, go into politics.
Everybody is saying something is wrong with Bombay University students. They do not behave like university students in other places in the country.
They are a strange lot. They actually go to colleges, attend classes, call their professors "sir", sit through entire examinations, do not protest if they fail.
They even play cricket, at least St. Xavier's does.
And what happened yesterday in this great city, with a university which great city, with a university which has already celebrated its centenary and done with it, has raised even more commets.
The newspapers described the University of Bombay students to be unique. The chancellor and the vice-chancellor described them to be different from university students elsewhere.
And do not made any mistake, the students deserved all that was said about them. They marched in procession from university gardens to Rang Bhavan. Then sat through a couple a long speeches with only a murmur. They politely applauded all their friends who received prizes for wuch things as best in Marathi discussion and English dramas.
And to top it all they asked for a holdiay and promptly got it (today is the holiday) without having to gherao their chancellor or their vice-chancellor or, at least, some small lecturer trying to make a living.
And look at all the other universities. In Madras they are trying to reform All-India Radio, in Kerala they are supporting the central government employees, in Benaras they keep closing down the university indefinitely in Calcutta no examiner dare set a paper the students cannot answer.
And what do they do in Bombay? If you were on the road, somewhere in ithe Fort area, last evening, you saw it. They were led like lambs to Rang Bhavan and the only time they raised their voices was when they "requested" for a holiday.
So everybody is asking what is wrong with the students of Bombay University. I, who have an answer for evething, have no answer for this.
