This is positively the second-last week of the summer... (May 21, 1990)

This is positively the second-last week of the summer. Enjoy it while you may:

A dip in the ocean, a cold shower, chilled beers, the smooth feel of Nycil powder on prickly heat, white towel T-shirts, siesta in the afternoon, the shade of a tree in the unversity garden, Kwality ice-cream, the stirring of the warm air by a ceiling fan, walks in Marine Drive in the late evenings, the luxury of complaining about the heat, the comfort of lungies, entering an air-conditioned restaurant from the hot street outside, planing a last-minute holiday in the hills, early mornings in a swimming-pool, green salads and cold white meats for lunch, the almost erotic pleasure of switching on an air-conditioner, taking a break from work, talking about The Taj Holiday Village, Goa, the seasonís last alphonsos, admiring the wild bougainvilleas embroidering the ovalís boundaries, the ecstacy of sweating like a steam engine, studying the setting sun painting the late summer skies, thinking about Ootacamund, iced tea with mint leaves, watering the lawns, staying indoors, Yankee Doodle ice-cream, attending a wedding reception at theTurf Club where the hosts insist that you should come dressed informally, cologne water and the ice blue coolness of after-shave, lying in a hammock in the garden, sailing in a Seabird in the Bombay harbour, pink gins and bloody marys, watching the grass grow at the Willingdon, betting on outstation races, Joy ice-cream, sitting in the dark in a cane-chair in the centre of Brabourne Stadium, having a prawn cocktail packed between crushed ice, three glasses of the falooda of Badshah Cold Drink Depot, papaiya in the morning, melon in the afternoon, making time for Limca, fight fiction, walking into the sea at Juhu, lying in a Parsi easychair at the Ripon Club and throwing up ideas, strawberries and cream, the strawberries direct from Mahableshwar, the cream from Parsi Dairy, having a close crop at Air Cool, Go-Cool ice-cream, browsing at Nalanda, plaining a trip to Gangtok, oil massage, Roohafza sitting inside the Gateway, watching the blue hills of Uran from where the monsoon will finally arrive.

Remember, just two weeks of summer left. Make ice while the sun shines.
