And, as is my practice, I will now present for the 1,623 people in India... (October 30, 1985)

And, as is my practice, I will now present for the 1,623 people in India who do not know anything about cricketers, my thumb-nail sketches of the members of the team.

Kapil Dev Captain, pace bowler, fast scoring batsman, slow thinker. Best innings against Zim babwe (yes, it plays cricket some times). reported to have bad vibes with Gavaskar.

Ravi Shastri. Vice-captain, world's champion cricketer (for one day cricket), useful all-rounder, can bat at any number, bats with great patience, patting back half volleys, or scores six sixers in an over. Is generally seen around in Proline shirt and an Audi car. Not engaged to a would be film star.

Sunil Gavaskar. Does not want to be captain does not want to open the innings, does not want to play on Irani Trophy. Every time he makes a century, the nation's leading cricket correspondents describe him as little Master, every time he does not, they collectively dismiss him as a has been.

Dilip Vengsarkar. Regular scorer of runs, though nobody seems to be aware of it. Some say he should have been captain, now there is not chance of his being one. Biggest concern as he leaves with other team mates for Sharjah Whether his passport is in order.

K. Srikkant. Only India would have him as an opening batsman. For any other country he would have come in sixth or seventh or even eighth. Or not come in at all.

M. Azharuddin. There are some batsmen who score a century on their debut in Test cricket, then never score another century. Then there are others, who score three centuries in their test debut then.. Though everybody says he is too good a batsman not to come out of his bad patch.

Mohinder Amarnath. The most amazing man in world cricket. The man who was out in the cold, then came back, then went out in the cold again, then came back. Should have been the captain this time.

S. Kirmani. Same as Amarnath except, of course, the captain part.

Kiran More. Substitute for Vishwanth. Or if Kirmani is the substitute for Vishwanth, them substitute for Kirmani.

Chetan Sharma, Raju Kulkarni, Rajinder Singh Ghai. Selected to bowl ten over each in the limited overs games. May the best bowler take the maximum wickets.

Shivlal Yadav and Sivaramakrishnan. Indian spin without the magic of Indian spin. Should be prepared for a long hard tour.

Roger Binny. Somebody in the selectors must have suddenly awakened and remembered him. "I say, what about this chap, Roger Binny. The guy who used to play cricket.

Ashok Malhotra. Likely to spend the tour escorting the drinks trolley on to the field.
