My friend, who lives on the 21st floor and is known to give more expensive gifts for Chirstmas than Santa Claus financed by the Sultan of Brunei, has sent his gifts for our family.
For my younger son, Derek, who has often said that when he grows up he wants to be an engine driver, he has sent two fullsized engines, one steam and the other electric, plus an other electric, plus an exact replica of the Deccan Queen, with passengers from Pune and Lonavla sitting in it. He has also bought one track between Bombay and Pune from the Central Railway and transferred it in the name of my son so that he may drive his train along that track whenever he likes.
However, since he knows that being an engine driver is an ambition that all little boys have and grow out of, he has also sent him the latest Boeing aircraft, in case he later decides he wants ot become a prime minister (or at least member of the Lok Sabha via the Amethi by-elections) and has to begin as a pilot. The aircraft is right now flying over our building, since we have to still find a place to garage it.
For my elder son, Darryl, who hates his present school, my friend has built a brand new school and presented it to him. Since my friend has started a trust in my son's name to run the school and meet its day-to-day expenses, thre will be no fees charged in the school and my son can invite all his friends to join him. He can also apooint his own teachers.
With the school, there is a gymnasium, a playground, and Sunil Gavaskar as cricket coach.
For the wife, my friend has sent Tribhovandas Zaveri & Sons, Opera House and Zaveri Bazar, and Popley & Sons, plus three sari stores at Marine Lines. He has also sent her a one-year recurring ticket (pre-paid) to travel to Bangkok and Hong Kong for shopping.
For my dog, Bolshoi the Boxer, he has sent the new Russian flag, with its border studded with rubies, pearls and diamonds, and a colour photograph of Mr. Yeltsin, personally autographed by the President to Bolshoi.
Finally, for me, he has sent a greeting card. It is a nice card, there is a message inside that says: "What greater gift can you offer a true and sincere friend than wishes for a happy and prosperous new year."
