A spokesman of the Janata Dal was telling me how difficult it... (May 23, 1990)

A spokesman of the Janata Dal was telling me how difficult it is for the party to choose a chief minister if Haryana who is not related to Mr. Devi Lal. "Ranjit Singh, who is an MLA and was a member of the Haryana Urban Development Authority, is out, even if he makes up with his father and brother. He is the third son of Mr. Devi Lal," the spokesman said. "True," I said. "Pratap Singh, who is the chairman of the Small Scale Cottage Industries Corporation and Export Promotion of Haryana is out because he is the second son of Mr. Devi Lal," he said. "Right," I said. "On the same grounds, Jagdish Kumar is out, because he is the youngest son of Mr. Devi Lal," the spokesman said. "Correct," I said. "Ajay Singh and Abhay Singh, the two sons of Om Prakash Chautala, are out, because they are grandsons of Mr. Devi Lal. And if you cannot have sons, you cannot have grandsons also," the spokesman pointed out. "Yes," I said. "By the same count, the sons of Pratap Singh are also out, because they are grandsons of Mr. Devi Lal," he said. "Absolutely," I said. "Atamjeet Singh Nehra, who has been made the advocate-general of Haryana, is out, because he is the son-in-law of Mr. Devi Lal's brother, Sahib Ram. Also, Sahib Ram is out, because he is the brother of Mr. Devi Lal," he said. "Sure," I said. Mahendra Singh Lathar, who is the chairman of the Haryana Marketing Board and a former MP, is out because he is husband of Mr. Devi Lal's niece," the spokesman said." "Certainly," I said. "Vijay Kumar, who is both in charge of a distillery and an excise officers, is out, because he is Mr. Devi Lal's nephew," he said. "Fine," I said. "Kamal Vir Singh, who is on deputation to the Haryana chief minister's secretariat and officer on special duty to the chief minister, is out, because he is Mr. Devi Lal's first cousin," he said. "Definitely," I said. "Mr. Takram, who is the chairman of the Haryana Housing Board, is our, because he is the father-in-law of Mr. Devi Lal's granddaughter. You can't have that sort of thing," the spokesman said. "Of course," I said. "But then who will you have as chief minister?" "Anybody who can prove beyond doubt that he not related to Mr. Devi Lal," the spokesman said.
