This morning, what political columinists are discussing is... (February 8, 1990)

This morning, what political columinists are discussing is: Now that Mr. Devi Lal is out of the cabinet, as forecast by them, what will he do next?

Several alternatives are open to him including:

Return to Haryana as chief minister, I am sure he will be welcomed back with open arms.

Make a deal with Mr. V.P. Singh to get his son, Chautala, made deputy prime minister.

Give another interview to Mr. Pritish Nandyof The Illustrated Weekly Of India.

Take a break at the nature health cure institute in Banglore.

Apologise to Mr. Arun Nehru, or, since it is all over, make fresh accusations against him.

Join the Congress-I and transfer to Mr. Rajiv Gandhi some of the headaches he has been providing to Mr. V.P. Singh.

Join Mr. Chandra Shekhar and sit and sulk.

Abandon all hopes of becoming prime minister.

Retire from politics and become the first farmer to appointed ambassador to the US.

Pick up the telephone and abuse Mr. Arun Shourie.

Call a meeting of the chief ministers of Haryana, UP Bihar and Orissa anc chalk out a plan of future course of action. After all, if he once single-handedly brought down the Congress government, he could now bring down the Janata Dal government.

Write his memoirs.

Bring the farmers of Haryana and UP to Delhi and demonstrate his strength.

Abuse the bjp. Abuse the CPM.

Call a press conference and abuse the capitalist press.

Write one more letter to ther prime minister accusing of having too much spice.

So much for Mr. Devi Lal. Next, the political columnists will have to consider when Mr. V.P. Singh will have to go and what will he do after that.
