A friend, who is residing at the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme... (January 8, 1986)

A friend, who is residing at the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme, was telling me this morning about his new neighbour. “We are all very excited, imagine having Mr. Rajneesh as neighbour. It is even better than having all those film stars.”

I though you wouldn’t be happy having Rajneesh in the neighbour,” I said. “The president of Uruguay wasn’t happy having him.”

The president of Uruguay does not know when he is well off,” my friend said. “Already the value of property in the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme and even in Khar-Danda has gone up three fold. They say that what Mr. Rajneesh did for Pune and Orgon, he is now going to do for Juhu-Vile Parle.

“But what about the children!” I said. “Think of all this free love and that sort of stuff that goes on wherever he goes.”

Oh, to each his won way of life,” my friend said. “You know, in our Juhu-Vile Parle area, we have never interfered with the way our neighbours live. I mean, if Rishi Kapoor wants to come and beat up Sanjay Khan, or whoever it was he beat up, that is their affair. The rest of the neighbours are not going to be concerned about if and their children will still go to school in the morning.”

“Well, if that is the way you feel about it,” I said. “Has Mr. Rajneesh settled down nicely?”

“Not yet, it will take a little time arranging things and setting up house,” my friend said. “You must have read, he has brought four tonnes of luggage with him, mainly air-conditioners and minirefrigerators. It will take some time fixing them in all the appropriate palces.”

“What about the Rolls-Royces?” I asked. “When he brings all of them down, they will fili up all your 13th Roads and 17th Roads and 26the Roads.”

“There is nothing wrong with having a few Rolls in the streets. It gives the neighbourhood an air, not like your red Marutis,” my friend said. “Besides, I hear he has sold all the Rolls-Royces and bought a diamond-studded wrist-watch with the money.”

“I don’t think you have thought this out carefully,” I said. “If Mr. Rajneesh were to stay next-door alone, or even with two or three of his lady disciples, it may be all right. But what about all the hundreds and thousands of othere disciples from all over the world who will be landing up in Juhu-Vile Parle.”

“What about them!” my friend said. “The rickshaw-wallas are looking forward to them, they would be able to raise their fares and make some money, as the Pune rick shaw-wallas did.”
