And, for the Saturday before the budget... (July 20, 1991)

And, for the Saturday before the budget, a few stray thoughts and a few general observations and a few points of view (all my own work):

Like it is a good thing that at a time of the worst ever economic crisis in the nation's history, the Congress in in power and not one of the other fringe parties. And this in spite of the Congress itself being responsible for the present crisis with its years of mismangement.

Like I am confident that we will come out of this crisis. And the reason for my confidence is that at last we have a sound and sensible person at the head of the government and professional economist and banker as finance minister.

And I can think of only a handful of finance minister who were qualified for their portfolio: Dr. John Mathai , T.T. Krishnamachari, C.D. Deshmukh, and to limited extent Yashwant Sinha. But not Morarji Desai and Y.B. Chavan and V.P. Singh.

Like forget the opposition, not everybody in the cabinet seems to be agreeable to all the proposals, or most of the proposals, in the new industrial policy. Hence, the delay, and I sincerely hope sensible policy is not watered down to help those vested interests who have been helped these last 40 years.

Like the rich can look after themselves; the poor have to depend on the trade unions to safeguard their interests. That is one of the tragedies of their lives.

And I am getting a little bored reading that nobody wants another election. Because nobody means, who? The politicians do not want another election. The public another election. The public would not mind, in the next elections they would wipe out all the politicians who have survied this election.

And the ambitions of our politicians are difficult to bear: They want to be prime minister, minister, leaders of opposition, speakers, deputy speakers, there is no end. And compared to these covetous men, consider Mrs. Sonia Gandhi - she does not want to be anything. Though some people may ask the question - for how long!

Like I do not understand why I should take a catamaran and reach Goa in seven-and-a-half hours, when I can take a plane and reach it in 40 minutes or take a nice big and comfortable boat and reach it leisurely in 20 hours.

And to those going to Goa, I wish to instruct: Out-of-the-way resorts on secluded beaches are meant for sun-worshipping Europeans who are shite and want to get brown, and not for Indians who are brown and do not want to get black.

Like if Indian cricket teams may now visit South Africa and play there, Indian tennis teams should be allowed to visit Israel and play the Davis Cup there. Fair is fair.

And this final point of view:

That if the BJP had formed the government in New Delhi, India would have been now as Uttar Pradesh is with the BJP government in Lucknow.
