My two sons, Darryl and Derek, came home yesterday looking very excited. They had seen their first Congressman."
Darryl my elder son, said "I was the first to see him then I told Derek, he came out of the Bombay Central station with a trunk and bedding and asked people where he could find Mr. Murli Deora."
Derek, my younger son, said. "I spotted him first. I was actually looking at him when Darryl told me there was Congressman. But I knew before that that he had to be a Congressman, because our teacher had told us exactly what to look for and how to identify."
I said "There is no need for you two to quarrel as to who saw the Congressman first. Let us say both of you that you have been among the first children to have spotted the century's first Congressman in Bombay."
Darryl said. "The school hassent all the children out to spot Congressmen. Some of the children who live in the suburbs have even gone to the airport. One of the boys claims he spotted a Congressman called Moopanar or something. But he doesn't count."
"No, I don't think he counts," I said.
"Derek said. "As the days go by, we Congressmen coming out of railway stations, airport ST stop. Our teacher says there will be two lakhs of Congressman.
Not to lakhas about 50,000," I said "That is the figure given by the chief minister and he should know being a Congressman him self, though of a common, local variety. Your teacher should not exaggerate like this and put wrong figures into young minds. I gressmen in the world."
Darryl said. "Our teacher says they come to Bombay in such large numbers only once in 100 years. Otherwise they are just birds of passage."
Derek said. "We have been asked to make notes of the Congressmen in our exercise books and classify them according to the regions from where they have migrated. Also to divide them according to old Congressmen and present Congressmen.
"The old Congressmen have become very rare species, "I said, "I doubt if there are many left. Still I wish you the best luck and hope you may find a few."
Darryl said. "Anyway we saw the first Congressman arriving In Bombay that will go to our credit."
"I am happy for you," I said. "If you carry on like this, maybe one day you will grow up to be another Mr. Salim Ali."
