The wife was saying this morning: “Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee is getting himself arrested so that the price of gas cylinders is brought down. Why don’t you also get arrested? All your life you want others to fight your battles.” I said: “I have never asked anybody to fight my battles, least of all Mr. Vajpayee. And, in any case, Mr. Vajpayee’s arrest has got no relationship with your gas cylinder.” The wife said: “It is a matter of shame that Mrs. Ambika Soni, a lady, should court arrest and be taken in an ST bus to the Mandir Marge police station in order that you can afford to feed your family tow square meals a day. You should be at the police station and not here.” “Look,” I said, “it is these people’s job to court arrest and hinder the govermment in its smooth functioning. My job and yours is t vote for them that is all.” “If everybody were to think like you, it will be the end of democracy in India,” the wife said. “Mr. Bahuguna, at his age, can defy the policy and get himself pushed into a bus, and the Delhi police are very rough, not like our little Maharashtrian policemen. And all you can say is that you vote for them. Not that you have voted for Mr. Bahuguna.” Mr. Bahuguna does not stand for elections from Bombay, Mr. Murli Deora and Mr. Sunil Dutt stand from Bombay, so I can't possibly vote for him,” I said. “I any case, like Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, I am totally against agitational politics. If the prices have risen, we have to bear with that, I only hope they do not rise any more.” “If it were not for Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan and Mr. Samar Mukherjee, who have courted arrest and been prepared to spend the rest of their lives in prisons, the price of your Amul butter would not have stopped where it did,” the wife said. “It is about time you started taking more interest in getting arrested.” “I have never taken interest in getting arrested and I am not going to take interest now,” I said. “I think the whole scene is obscene, politicians, businessmen, senior executives of large companies, getting themselves arrested.” The wife said: “There is nothing obscene in Mr. K. P. Unnikrishnan, Mr. Basudev Acharya and Begum Abdullah getting arrested so that you pay less fare to travel on the Delhi Transport Corporation buses. I think on this Bharat Bandh day you should go, out on the road and get yourself arrested.” “Very well, I will do so,” I said. “But you please see to it that Mr. Tobaccowala issues a strong statement in my defence.”
