The wife was telling me this morning... (September 2, 1990)

The wife was telling me this morning: “Why don’t you leave the Congress and join the Janata Dal. Everybody is doing it.”

“What kind of talk is that,” I said. “How can I leave the Congress and join the janata Dal when I am not in the Congress.”

“Why should anybody know you are not in the Congress,” the wife said. “Why should you announce to the world you are not in the Congress when everybody will assume you are.”

“Because it just so happens that I am not in Congress. And I don’t want anybody to think I am in the Congress. I would be ashamed to be in it.”

“Exactly, you are ashamed to be in the Congress, therefore you are leaving it and joining the Janata Dal,” the wife said. “That is what everybody else is doing, including Mr. Tirpude and Dr. Rafiq Zakaria, and what is that you are going to do.”

“I am going to nothing of the sort,” I said. “I don’t have to follow all the Tirpudes amd Zakarias of the world, moving from Congress to Janata Dal, then back to Congress, then to BJP, sorry, Shiv Sena.”

“Nobody is asking you to join Shiv Sena, just leave the Congress, which has no future under Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, and join the Janata Dal. It is as simple as that,” the wife said.

“It is not as simple as that,” I said. “I am not in the Congress, so I cannot join the Janata Dal, though, actually, I could join the Janata Dal without being in the Congress. I mean, people could, V.P. Singh for one was, but I don’t want to.”

“Don’t confuse things,” the wife said. “You love to conguse everything and everybody. Just hand in your resignation from the Congress, primary membership, remember, meet Mr. V.P. Singh, and join the Janata Dal.”

“Why don’t you understand, I cannot resign from the Congress, because I am not its member. Consequently, I cannot change over to the Janata Dal, because I am not changing over from the Congress as I was not its member.”

“If you are not a member of the Congress, then why are you refusing to resign from it,” the wife said. “I do not understand your logic. Why are you refusing to leave something you do not belong to.”

“Please do not discuss my logic; it is your logic that is faulty,” I said. And I am not resigning from anything or becoming a member of anything and that is final.

“Just answer one question,” the wife said. “Are you objecting to resigning from the Congress, or are you objecting to joining the Janata Dal?”
