The wife was telling me: "Everybody is trying to get rid of Mr. V.P. Singh. You are doing nothing."
"Everybody is not trying to get rid of Mr. Singh, only Mr. Devi Lal is doing it, because he wants to be prime minister himself, and Mr. Om Prakash Chautala is doing it, because he is Mr. Devi Lal's favourite son, and Mr. Chandra Shekhar is doing it, because he is that kind of a person," I said.
"Whenever you go, you hear them planning to get Mr. Singh out, and you sit there and say nobody is doing it," the wife said.
"I do not know where you go where you find these people planning to get rid of Mr. Singh, because where I go, I do not find any. Except Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, who wants to get Mr. Singh out, because he thinks then his party will again make him prime minister, and Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar wants him out, because he wants to write the prime minister's speeches again, and Mr. M.J. Akbar, because there is no point in his entering politics if Mr.V.P. Singh is to continue as prime minister for five years."
"People are collecting signatures to remove Mr. Singh as prime minsiter, but you, leave aside collecting signatures, you don't even sign when Mr. Santosh Bhartiya brings you a memorandum," the wife said.
"Nobody is collecting signatures against Mr. Singh except Mr. Bhartiya, because he does not know what he is doing, and Mr. George Fernandes, because he is upset with Mr. Singh for removing him as minister for Kashmir, and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, because he is a snake in the grass," I said.
"The whole country wants Mr. Singh to go, only Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani, Mr. Kapal Mehra and Mr. Lalit Suri want him to go, because they may fool Mr. Jyoti Basu, but they can't fool Mr. V.P. Singh," I said.
"There is not a person who does not want to free country from the leadership of Mr. Singh, but you sometimes behave as if you like having him as your prime minister," the wife said.
"People want Mr. Singh to continue as prime minister, except Mr. Ajit Singh, who is like his father and cannot be trusted, and Mr. Arif Mohammad Khan, who is like Mr. Arun Nehru, and Mr. Arun Nehru, who is like Mr. Arif Mohammad Khan, and Mrs. Maneka Gandhi, who has been given a raw deal after all that whe did for him."
"People are saying that Mr. Singh's time is up and he should quit as prime minister, but you are not saying anything," the wife said.
"People are not saying anything of the sort, except Mr. L.K. Advani, whose reasons we all know, and Mr. Surjit Singh, whose conspiracy has been discovered by Mr. Arun Shourie," I said.
"I do not care about all that," the wife said. "I think it is about time you started working for the dismissal of Mr. V.P. Singh."
"Very well," I said. "Should I begin by attacking him for being weak or for being vacillating."
