I was telling my sons, Darryl and Derek: "Next Sunday, we will spend the day at Mr. Nana Chudasama's Tourist Plaza."
Darryl said: "I don't want to put mehndi on my hands. Let us instead go to Esselworld."
I said: "We can go to Esselword also. There is no reason why we should not, but let us go to Mr. Chudasama's plaza, it is so much more ducational. You can learn how to make pottery and what costumes the women in Rajasthan wear. Next Sunday, there are going to be also folk-dancers from Gwalior, that should be very interesting."
"If you have seen one folk-dancer, you have seen all," Derek said. "Who wants to go on a Sunday morning to see folk-dancers from Gwalior."
A lot of people would like to spend their Sunday s watching them," I said, "dockworkers from Lion Gate, for one. Besides, you are absolutely wrong to say if you have seen one folk-dancer, you have seen all. You have no idea of the rich tapestry of Indian folk-dancing, unity in diversity, as Panditji used to say and which everybody keeps repeating now."
Darryl said: "If you want to go, you go I don't want to see children's magic shows and performing monkeys."
"Shame on you for talking like that about a cultural feast that the organisers have so kindly arranged for us," I said. "If everybody starts thinking like you, then Mr. Pasricha may as well put the traffic back on K. Dubash Marg on Sundays."
"I have heard reports that the performances are of a very ordinary standard," Derek said. "Anybody who wants to sing or dance is allowed to come and do so. All they are paid is conveyance allowance, if they are not staying too far."
"Come, come, it is not like that," I said. "They had a selection committee to audition and select the performers, and the committee included such eminent persons as Mr. Suresh Kalmadi and Mr. Yusuf Merchant. So you can't say that just anybody can go and start performing at the Tourist Plaza."
"In any case, why should we go! It is a Tourist Plaza and we are not tourists," Darryl said.
"It is not meant for tourists, it is meant for everybody," I said. "They had to call it Tourist Plaza because Mr. Madhavrao Scindia, who inaugurated it, is the minister for tourism. They could not have called it Civil Aviation Plaza, could they!"
